Adeptus Mechanicus War Convocation List (~2000 points)

Recently I was asked to post the upgrades to the theoretical Adeptus Mechanicus War Convocation list I summarized last month. The War Convocation list is pretty big, so I figured I'd give it it's own post it rather than put it my comments section.

Remember that all weapon and wargear options taken by units in this Formation are free. While this doesn't mean too much for the Cult Mechanicus or Knight units, it benefits the Skitarii units immensely. I haven't listed any default wargear.

Cult Mechanicus Battle Congregation
  • Tech-priest Dominus: Phosphor serpenta and Uncreator Guantlet
  • Kataphron Destroyer Squad (3 servitors): 1 Servitor with heavy grav cannon and cognis flamer
  • Kataphron Breacher Squad (4 servitors): 2 Servitors with torsion cannons and hydraulic claws
  • Kastelan Robot Maniple (1 Datasmith, 2 Robots): Anzion's Pseudogenetor (Datasmith); both Robots have TL phosphor blasters, one has a carapace phosphor blaster
Skitarii Battle Maniple
  • Vanguard Squad (10 men): Omniscient Mask, radium pistol, taser goad (Vanguard Alpha); 3 plasma calivers, enhanced data tether
  • Ranger Squad (10 men): Arc maul, arc pistol (Ranger Alpha); 3 arc rifles, omnispex
  • Ruststalker Squad (5 men): Prehensile dataspike (Ruststalker Princeps)
  • Infiltrator Squad (5 men): Infoslave skull (Infiltrator Princeps)
  • Ironstrider Squadron (1 Ballistarii): TL cognis lascannon
  • Onager Dunecrawler Squadron (2 Onagers): 2 neutron lasers, 2 cognis manipulators
Imperial Knight Oathsworn Detachment
  • Knight Crusader: Rapid fire battlecannon, Ironstorm missile pod

Onagers are definitely better in trios
I wasn't entirely happy with this original list. First, it didn't quite make it to 2000 points (that's a minor complaint when you're getting hundreds of points worth of free wargear). Unfortunately, the list is hard to tailor to a specific points value since the only way to change the size of the list is to add or subtract units or models. Second, I didn't feel like it took advantage of certain abilities, the most obvious of which being the fact that two Onagers in a squadron only generate a 5++ protective field, whereas three Onagers would generate a 4++ field.

My final issue was that several units or wargear options required me to buy more models than I planned to field. For example, the Vanguard/Ranger box only provides one of each special weapon; to take three I would have to buy three squads while only being able to field two. The list also had me buying three boxes of Kataphrons (nine models total) just so I could field seven.

Here's a revised list:

Cult Mechanicus Battle Congregation
  • Tech-priest Dominus: Phosphor serpenta and Uncreator Guantlet
  • Kataphron Destroyer Squad (3 servitors): 1 Servitor with heavy grav cannon and cognis flamer
  • Kataphron Breacher Squad (3 servitors): 1 Servitor with torsion cannon and hydraulic claw
  • Kastelan Robot Maniple (1 Datasmith, 2 Robots): Anzion's Pseudogenetor (Datasmith); both Robots have TL phosphor blasters, one has a carapace phosphor blaster
Skitarii Battle Maniple
  • Vanguard Squad (10 men): Omniscient Mask, radium pistol, taser goad (Vanguard Alpha); 2 plasma calivers, enhanced data tether
  • Ranger Squad (8 men): Arc maul, arc pistol (Ranger Alpha); 2 arc rifles, omnispex
  • Ruststalker Squad (5 men): Prehensile dataspike (Ruststalker Princeps)
  • Infiltrator Squad (5 men): Infoslave skull (Infiltrator Princeps)
  • Ironstrider Squadron (1 Ballistarii): TL cognis lascannon
  • Onager Dunecrawler Squadron (3 Onagers): 3 neutron lasers, 3 cognis manipulators
Imperial Knight Oathsworn Detachment
  • Knight Crusader: Rapid fire battlecannon, Ironstorm missile pod

By cutting out one Kataphron Breacher and two Rangers, I was able to fit in a third Onager. The list comes in at 2003 points.

  1. just checked your impressive army list, its breathtaking!
I'm a nid and just want to get into Mechanicus world
May I ask what you think about the Cohort Mechanicus list?

    1. The special rules for this list are very good. All units benefit from Canticles of the Omnissiah, which get better the more units you have in the army. They're amazing if you have 8+ units; the Cohort Mechanicus has 14. They even throw in a bonus Canticle that gives all units an Invulnerable save for one turn. Similarly, all units have Doctrina Imperatives and a bonus Doctrina that gives all models +3 to their WS and BS for a turn.

The weakness of this list is its cost. With minimum unit sizes and no upgrades, the Cohort Mechanicus is a full 1870 points. A good portion of the cost comes from being forced to take the mediocre Electro-priests and two maniples of Kastelan Robots. (I like the Kastelans, but I don't think I'd ever take more than one maniple given their cost.) That leaves very little room for upgrades if you're playing a standard 2000 point game. With the kinds of upgrades I was considering for the War Convocation list (minus a few of the less useful ones), the Cohort ends up being over 2300 points. And that doesn't even include a Knight.

Unless you're playing a very large game (I'm thinking 2500 to 3000 points), I don't know if the benefits of the Cohort Mechanicus will compensate for the lack of upgrades. Personally, I prefer the War Convocation for the more flexible Cult Mechanicus portion of the list and the firepower that the Knight gives you.

  2. I actually had my own Adeptus Mechanicus War Convocation that I've finished building (painting half-done, they're sprayed) and I could get a game with it. The battle report is in my blog (Battle Report 3), but I don't think anyone is going to visit it anyway. My list was very similar to yours with just one or two differences.

    Adeptus Mechanicus War Convocation

    Cult Mechanicus Battle Congregation Detachment

Tech-Priest Dominus with Autocaduceus of Arkhan Land, conversion field, digital weapons and infoslave skull - 105

Kataphron Destroyers with cognis flamers = 165

Kataphron Destroyers with cognis flamers = 165

Kastelan Robot Maniple of 2 with 1 twin-linked heavy phosphor blaster and 1 carapace-mounted heavy phosphor blaster each and Cybernetica Datasmith with Raiment of the Technomartyrs, conversion field, digital weapons and infoslave skull - 290

    Total: 725

    Skitarii Battle Maniple

Skitarii Vanguard of 10 with Omnispex, conversion field, arc maul, digital weapons, Pater Radium and 3 plasma calivers - 55+5x9 = 100

6 Skitarii Rangers with Omnispex, conversion field, digital weapons, Skull of Elder Nikola and 2 arc rifles – 65+11 = 76

Sicarian Ruststalkers with conversion field, digital weapons, prehensile dataspike and the Omniscient Mask - 160

Sicarian Infiltrators with infoslave skull, conversion field, digital weapons, flechette blasters, taser goads and the Phase Taser - 185

Ironstrider Ballistarius with twin-linked cognis lascannon - 55

3 Onager Dunecrawlers with Icarus array/neutron laser, Mindscanner Probe, Cognis heavy stubber and Cognis Manipulator - 90x3 = 270

    Total: 846

    Imperial Knight Oathsworn Detachment

Knight Crusader with rapid-fire battle cannon and Stormspear rocket pod - 425

    Total: 1,996

I played a game against a bunch of Space Wolves, and yes, it is balanced. It's not broken, even with all the free upgrades. In fact, the free upgrades were what made it competitive. It was a very close game but I lost by 2 victory points (though if you look at my battle report, my opponent only had 3 marines and 1 flyer left). It has its weaknesses, so if you go for Onager Dunecrawlers with neutron lasers, the list is incredibly weak against air. If you use the Icarus array, you'll lose a good amount of firepower.

And I find that the 4++ invulnerable save for the Onager Dunecrawlers aren't very useful. Most of the time I just use the Shroud and Stealth Canticle to give them a 4+ cover save regardless of how many Dunecrawlers survived.

I'll mix the list around and experiment with a few more games and let you know what happens. I don't know if I'm going to swap out 1 Onager Dunecrawler for more Ironstrider Ballistarius, or change them for Sydonian Dragoons (assault proved to be priceless! My Ruststalkers and Infiltrators kicked ass in assault!), or swap the Kataphron Destroyers for Breachers so that I can fit in a 3rd Kastelan Robot. The Kastelan Robots proved surprisingly resilient and hard to kill, and the number of shots they pumped out were devastating.

    1. Forgive me if I'm wrong here but your list is well over what you believe it to be. You are only adding the troops and not the upgrades for all the weapons. Your list is a good few hundred off.

    3. The gimmick of the War Convocation is the "Might of the Adeptus Mechanicus" rule: "All weapon and wargear options taken by the units in this Formation, including any Relics of Mars or Arcana Mechanicum, are free. Furthermore, all weapons with the Gets Hot special rule carried by a model in this Formation no longer has the Gets Hot special rule."
